What's happening at the Allotments
Everyone is now in full swing with only a few odd patches "left fallow" where
people haven't had time to cultivate all of their plots this year.
A
wide variety of produce and flowers is being grown and the following veg and
fruit have been harvested so far:
peas, potatoes, cauliflower,
courgettes, onions, lettuces, beetroot, strawberries, blackcurrants,
gooseberries, and probably some others as well - these are just the ones I have
seen being taken.
We have had a couple of issues with livestock - we have a friendly mole who seems to love coming up in one of the plot, uprooting cauliflowers as he arrives - the plotholder is planning to let the mole know he is unwelcome and hopefully persuade him to travel elsewhere! One or two rabbits have also ventured on to the site but haven't been seen recently so hopefully they have decided to go elsewhere for their lunch. Blackbirds have been helping themselves to some of the strawberries on plot where no netting had been put over them - guess who will be netting their strawberry patch next year!
Otherwise, everything is going and growing well (including the weeds unfortunately but we can't have everything!)
Cheers

St Martins Allotment Association - AGM 2010
We recently held our first Annual General Meeting at the Community Centre. Over half of the allotment holders were able to attend and it was good to see everyone after the long, cold winter. We all started work on our allotments in July last year and it's been quite hard work getting things prepared but hopefully most people will be getting things planted and seeds sown soon for a bumper harvest later this year. Some of the plot are already looking really productive although others of us still have some hard work ahead!
The Association is a member of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners which gives us access to good deals on seeds and plants as well as reduced cost Public Liability Insurance and a wealth of information and advice from the Society's website. After just under a year of being in existence we have a member from each of the 15 plots and on some of the warmer days this month there has often been someone working hard on four or five plots at any time. It's great to be able to have a chat and compare plans with other plot holders although it does sometimes reduce the amount of work you get through!
We would like to thank the Trustees of the Community Centre, our landlords, for their efforts in helping to improve the site by getting some hedging plants.
More news and possibly some pictures later in the year
