Contact the Elderly

Please could I say a huge to thank you to those of you who have offered to host a tea party for the Contact the Elderly group. You have been wonderful, and have saved this group. Thank you so much.

I would like to add another plea if that’s okay. The group is very short of drivers, and we would be very grateful if anyone can help out.

As a driver, you would be using your own car to pick up two or three older people. You would then go along with them to the tea party, and enjoy the afternoon with them, before taking them home. It helps a lot if you enjoy tea and home-made cakes, as there are usually plenty on offer.

Tea parties take place once a month on a Sunday afternoon in the homes of volunteer hosts who live around the St Martin ’s and Oswestry area.

If you would like to know more, I’d be very happy to talk to you. Alternatively, you can ask anyone who is involved with the group.

How to Feel Great on a Monday Morning

The Oswestry and Borders Contact the Elderly Group held a spring party in St Martin’s Centre on Sunday 25th April. Councillor Steve Davenport and his wife Alison came along to meet the members of the group.

Growing older can lead to feeling isolated and lonely, and this group has been set up to help. Once a month volunteers take out a group of older people from St Martin’s and Oswestry area and take them to a volunteer’s home for Sunday afternoon tea. Members of the group say they love the social contact, and to meet up for a chat and a laugh.

Most of our hosts provide sandwiches and cake and a lot of tea. The afternoon generally last from 2.00 till 4.00 and about 10 people come along. All you need is to like older people, to have a downstairs loo, and not too many steps to your home.

The group has been meeting for almost a year, and the members really enjoy the friendship and warmth that it brings. In order to keep going, the group desperately needs more hosts. It s a great way of volunteering, especially for busy people, as it fits around work. If you have family, they can bee involved too. As a host you welcome the group into your home, just once a year, and provide a simple afternoon tea.
